Situated a little less than 70 miles from the South coast of England and only 8 miles from the French coast; Alderney is renowned for its tranquility and friendliness, its beautiful, clean beaches and breathtaking cliff-top walks. The little town of St Anne has cobbled streets, a relaxed atmosphere and numerous good places to eat and drink. For the active and enquiring visitor Alderney offers historical treasures ranging from the Stone Age through to World War 2. Its award-winning Museum houses a fascinating collection that includes Bronze Age axe-heads and weapons from a unique Elizabethan wreck which lies in local waters and is considered more archeologically important than the “Mary Rose”. The Island’s Victorian forts and Breakwater are outstanding examples of mid-nineteenth century military engineering.

Alderney has a compact but challenging 9-hole golf course, with every hole offering superb sea views. The Tennis Club has four recently constructed hard courts, which are open to visitors. Clay pigeon shooting takes place on Sundays in the ruins of Fort Albert, high above Braye Bay which is Alderney’s magnificent harbour, guarded by the former Admiralty Breakwater. Down at the harbour can be found the Alderney Sailing Club where visiting yachtsmen and women are warmly welcomed to the island.

In September, motor racing enthusiasts from Guernsey and Jersey travel to Alderney for the Annual Hill Climb and Sprint meeting, when a variety of saloons, single seater racing cars, karts and motor cycles hurtle up Tourgis Hill against the clock.

Alderney has some of the best sea fishing to be found anywhere in Europe, both from it's beautiful coastline and afloat on the wrecks, rocks, reefs and banks that surround the island. More about angling in Alderney
